'Fit and firm' for traffic police

Traffic police with big bellies will be asked to join a diet programme, with the target group being officers with waistlines larger than 36 inches, about 92 centimetres, and a body mass index over 30.

It is hoped it will not only improve their health, but also their personalities.

Pol Maj Gen Uthaiwan Kaeosaat, deputy chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau, said 50 officers from Division 5 will take part in the first diet programme, which will be supervised by Kluaynamthai hospital.

It amazes me that they care more about police being fat than they do about employing an honest corruption-free worker.

Slimmer, healthier police would also project a better image for the country as all Asean countries move toward the launch of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in December 2015
I love how its always about image and AEC. Its like they think no one outside of Thailand knows what this country is really like.

I seem to recall a similar story back in 2009 featuring videos of Pol. Sen. Sgt Maj. Samroeng Saengthong working out for free in California Wow. From what I saw of the portly K. Samroeng on duty at Ratprasong last year that campaign was about as successful as California Wow itself.

A bigger gird, a bigger rank, traffic cops have tummies exposed more than those higher rank cops. You can see those when you go to the parties where those big shot traditionally invited for the face of the host(me na me ta) You can see when they dance thai style(ram wong) they can't even move their feet from the same spot. Yes its good to have trim bodies but I wont think it make different if these traffic cops fat or slim will get the respect if they still stop motorists just for no reasons( may be expensive cars) except to make motorists pay bribery.

"The officer who drops the most fat will receive a 5,000 baht prize." Then he can take his friends out for a big dinner.

Many could lose 6 kg just by taking off their money belt.

In other words : no substantial change. No change of ethics or deonthology. Only a cosmetical make-over. As usual.

Do they have to be fit and slender to collect bribes? 90% of the police I see are in their air-conditioned stations or police-booth or they are waiting at the side of the street to collect bribes. I never ever saw a policeman running after a suspect. They don’t even try to arrest law-breakers who are stationary. So what difference can we expect?
