McDonald's oil poses risk, probe finds

The Consumer Protection Foundation has found one McDonald's outlet uses old cooking oil which contains a health-risk substance higher than the safety standard in its fried chicken.

Foundation representative Patchara Klaewkla yesterday said the group examined fried chicken samples from 11 outlets that sold fried chicken in Bangkok between Jan 21 and 23.

According to Mr Patchara, the McDonald's's branch in the Center One shopping mall at Victory Monument was found to have polar compounds at more than 25% of the food weight _ a Public Health Ministry safety standard.

A simple tip is to add 3 gm of vitaminC to each litre of oil, this will double its usable safe life.

McDonald's uses trans fats which can kill you. There's no reason to use them.

I wouldn't just single out McDonalds, just look around at the street vendors and see how they
    monitor their cooking ingredients.

It is a matter of economics. Throwing out old oil every day is quite expensive, unless you have the equipment to convert it into biodiesel, which is also costly.
I don't throw it out until it turns dark or has too much flavor from the food.

As is the Mc and many other fast food practices, the article is somewhat misleading, along with the regulations themselves. The oil presents a health hazard in any quantity, contributing to atherosclerosis. The longer it is used, the more outright poisons are present. The mention of paralysis in the article probably alludes to the risk or CVAs, cerebrovascular accidents, IE, a stroke.
Got to love the way big business and government chum it up to water down the relevant real public information.

Cooking oil should come with some kind of additive that will change color when it had been over used. I'd say that at least 99% of commercial cooking oil users don't care that it is a harmfull practice.
