Wichai blames govt, floodsfor delay in vaccine factory

- +

Former Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO) board chairman Wichai Chokwiwat blames the cabinet, technical obstacles and floods for the delay in building a vaccine factory.

He yesterday defended himself against alleged irregularities in the construction of an influenza and bird flu vaccine plant in Saraburi's Kaeng Khoi district, which is being probed by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). Dr Wichai said the plant faced delays from the beginning when cabinet approval was postponed from 2004 to 2009.

The project also faced technical problems because Thailand has never developed, and was not familiar with this vaccine-making technology. This meant more time was needed to consider the construction design, he said.
