Thai students rank low in world table

Performance continues to fall in maths, science

Thai students have again received "poor" scores in maths and science in an international ranking released yesterday.

The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement has released the results of its latest assessment for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

It measures the maths and science academic achievement of fourth-grade students (Prathom 4) in 52 countries and seven states, and eighth graders (Mathayom 2) in 45 countries and 14 states worldwide.

just wonder of why the pupils in Thailand used McDonald as their classroom. Many of pupils are sitting there over midnight. How can they go to school the next day ?... The goverment must give them a better place to doing the homework and eat better meals than only hamburgers and potato chips

The education system and the lack of political will to change it for the better that is the problem.

Everyone loves to jump on the teachers, simply parroting what they have heard someone say. In reality I have seen some very good secondary and primary school teachers in Thailand. But how much do you expect them to accomplish with 50 or 60 students crammed into a classroom like eggs in a carton? Simply maintaining discipline can occupy much of their time. It takes a very dedicated teacher to stay in teaching in those circumstances, especially since they could make almost as much money driving a taxi in Bangkok. In fact, I have encountered several taxi drivers who did quit teaching for that very reason.

I guess PTP believes buying tablet pc for 1st graders apparently solves the problem.

Unfortunately, many of them taught subjects in which they did not major, resulting in a lack of confidence and preparedness for teaching.

This really sums up the problem ...so many lost opportunity, manys smart Thai children will never even get the chance to shine with teachers and a system like this in place ...it is a National disgrace

Don't kid yourself, bachelors or masters degree from maybe all but the top two universities in Thailand is like high school diploma in any other first world country. They don't teach or require critical thinking or creative problem solving. It's read the book, and then spit it back out word for word on the exam. It's a test of rote memory, not retained knowledge or independent thinking.
