Jet ski scam under scrutiny

SURAT THANI: Tourism operators called on local authorities on Wednesday to strictly regulate jet ski renters at Koh Samui after four employees of a jet ski operator assaulted and injured a Swiss tourist.

Thanongsak Somwong, chairman of the Koh Samui tourism promotion association, said business owners and tourism operators wanted concerned agencies to impose stronger controls on more than 50 jet ski owners who are operating on Koh Samui’s beaches.

Mr Thanongsak said some operators took advantages or threatened physical attacks. He blamed state agencies for failing to crack down on rogue jet ski owners, resulting in a repeat of the similar incident.

How is this stuff still in the news? It's fairly evident that police work doesn't really exist here

It’s really quite surprising that the shipping lanes on both coasts of Thailand aren't choked with the wreckage of crashed jet skis by now.

how long have these scams been going on? in 2002 a friend of mine was caught in a jetski scam. when he returned the ski he was informed that there was damage to the tune of 5000 baht. he refused to pay and went on his way. he had barely gone fifty yards when three men jumped him and beat him up! they marched him to the atm machine and went off with 5000 baht! he reported the matter to the police but never heard anything further.
i am glad that the police are finally cracking down on these people and people like them, who give thailand a bad name!

It beggars belief that the TAT are unable to demonstrate to the police just how damaging this whole thing is becoming. I sometimes write travel guides, if they are about Phuket or Pattaya and clearly warn people not to rent jetskis, period. If the police are so ineffectual and it's ruining the island's image one way the businesses can deal with it is to print up laminated fact sheets about jetskis, encouraging people to completely stay away from them, and post them up in all the hotels and guesthouses, when business dries up they will get the message and not even show up with their jetskis.

The Koh Samui police seem know what they are doing and carrying out a good job with positive results investigating a tourist who was beat up. Could you please send them to Krabi and get something done about the rape of that poor Dutch girl, she deserves justice. The whole world knows about this and have been waiting a long time for police action.

The real scam is that renting a jet ski is about the most boring half hour you can ever have.

The business of jet ski isnt actually the renting of the jet ski its scamming of money for fake damage or broken engines that arent really broken .Ban jet ski rentals totally .Problem solved .
