School children welcome the opportunity to let their hair down

Schoolboys and girls have welcomed the education minister's order to all schools to abolish strict limits on the length of students' hair.

Phongthep Thepkanchana issued the order on Wednesday after receiving a number of complaints from students who complained they are punished in school for having long hair.

Their schools, however, say the length of their hair violates a 1972 ministerial regulation.

Hair style and uniforms do nothing for education except create a false sense that kids are actually being educated .Focus on reforming education and not how pretty everyone looks .

I'm glad my daughter who is turning into a young woman doesn't have to parade herself andask permission regarding her hair anymore. Hopefully this is the start of fixing many education problems in Thailand remembering how AEC is going to impact on many.

"More emphasis should be given to the interior, not the exterior, of the scalp of the students." Especially by the students themselves. University campuses are not supposed to be a fashion show.

#12 you are right. My son has freedom to chose.
Unfortunately, my sister who is a government officer has no freedom to express her opinion.

Kudos to the the Minister on this one... I agree with D2 - it's about control... My 7 year old son was hit with a cane by the 'head' teacher in Grade 1 for not cutting his hair short enough. As parents, we were not even consulted until my son told me after school. After questioning the head teacher, she explained it wasn't necessary to advise parents as the punished children would surely remind parents of their 'error'. She was in charge, she reminded me! Needless to say, we changed to a school with a more Western outlook.

It is ok that the student drop out rate it out of control. It is ok that Thailand has the 37th worse education system in the world. It is ok graduates cannot think for themselves or compete in the international job place. It is ok when college students cannot spell their own names in English. If this is all the education minister has to do, we need to find a new minister who will give the kids a solid education and a fighting chance to be more than a laborer their entire lives.

On the other hand, I hope this is not a free for all hair style. Schools should have rules and dress code. If hair styles interfere or disrupt others while learning, then we have a problem of learning. I think short hair helps maintain hygiene, i.e. lice population/spread is control. Thailand is a hot and humid country.
