Police boast massive drug haul

2.2m speed pills, 47kg of 'ice' netted in 3 busts

More than 2.2 million speed pills and 47kg of crystal methamphetamine, widely known as ya ice, have been seized by police in three major drug busts.

Drug suspects are brought to the Royal Thai Police Office yesterday as Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and police chief Adul Saengsingkaew discuss three major drug raids in the past few days. More than 2.2 million methamphetamine tablets and 47kg of crystal meth were seized in the busts. PAWAT LAOPAISARNTAKSIN

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who oversees the government's drug suppression policy, and police chief Adul Saengsingkaew announced the hauls at Royal Thai Police Headquarters yesterday.

    well said D1, the only message being put out here is that you will only face punishment if you're poor or fair far down on the criminal totem pole.

    The global war on drugs is an ugly, expensive waste that is due an overhaul by about 39 years now. Shocking and disgraceful imo

    The question is: When Thai youth see Chalerm boasting of "his" success in this photo op., do they have the intelligence to see the gross hypocrisy of this official gloating over interfering in other people's recreational drug use when his own essentially identical drug use is now in the news?

    I think Thai youth do have the wits to see that this is dishonest, irrational and utterly unjust. Naturally, it undermines respect for the law when the authorities are so clearly in the wrong on all counts: reason, justice and honesty.
