'Poor' 16-year-old steals DVDs

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy for allegedly stealing DVDs at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Chon Buri's Sattahip district on Wednesday evening.

Store manager Prachaya Nakthong, 29, told police that the teenager (name withheld) arrived on a motorcycle and walked around the store for several minutes. 

A man who was using an ATM machine in front of the store at the time witnessed the boy stuffing two DVDs into his pants and the man immediately reported it to the store clerks, Mr Prachaya said.

    About as inspiring of confidence in Thai policing as the usual reports of massive drug busts.
    The difference being that in this case the criminal has actually done something that harmed another, albeit in so minor a way that it hardly rates news.

    Now, a few arrests of the criminals selling and the thieves buying all those pirated DVDs that line Silom Road every night when I walk past might be worth reporting. Maybe in Thailand's next life?

    Perhaps if the police were not instructed to waste their time on worse than worthless arrests and photo opps, they would be able to do something to really help Thai citizens.
