Landmark deal made to start mine-clearing

Thailand and Cambodia will conduct joint landmine clearing operations in the provisional demilitarised zone (PDZ) around Preah Vihear temple under a landmark deal signed yesterday.

The agreement was reached at the end of a three-day meeting between the Thailand Mine Action Centre, led by Lt Gen Sihanart Wongsaroj, and the Cambodia Mine Action Centre in Cambodia's Siem Reap province. Thailand and Cambodia will both send teams to clear landmines in the 17.3 sq km PDZ set up by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2011, a military source said.

"It is the first time Phnom Penh has agreed to let us inside their territory to conduct de-mining operations," the source said. In the next two weeks, five officers from each country will be sent to examine the site, the source added.
