Japan wants faster murder probe

Japanese ambassador Shigekazu Sato yesterday called on the national police chief to speed up the investigation into the 2007 murder of a Japanese tourist.

Tomoko Kawashita, 25, from Osaka, was found dead with her throat slashed near a temple in Sukhothai historical park on Nov 25, 2007.

Several suspects were rounded up for questioning, but all were later released and the investigation has since stalled.

It is sad that the family of Tomoko Kawashita has been denied justice in this murder case that occurred over five years ago and no arrest made.

Research shows the young lady was traveling Northern Thailand alone to Sukhothai around Loy Krathong because she heard that's where the festival started.

Although a tragic violent crime, the death of Ms. Kawashita, could be used by the Ambassador to promote the safety of the 1.2 million Japanese tourists, who visit Thailand each year, by stressing that tourists are safer traveling in groups.
