Five passengers were killed and 38 others injured when a Bangkok-Chumphon bus ran off the highway and overturned in Chumphon's Tha Sae district early Wednesday morning.

Pol Lt Sonthaya Thaipradith, duty officer at tambon Salui police station, said the accident occurred about 3.45am on the Petchakasem highway between kilometre markers No 463-464 in Chumphon’s Tha Sae district.

The bus overturned in the right lane of the southern bound highway and was severely damaged. Police called to the scene said the bodies of five dead passengers were lying on the road.

D#6 Good idea but who will enforce these measures. There are good traffic laws in-place in Thailand but the are not enforced. Get the BIB to do its job, educate the population and then perhaps we may see positive changes. to the

1, Make seatbelts compulsory
2, Install speed limiters on buses and trucks
3, Zero alcohol limit for bus and truck drivers
4, Special training for bus drivers
5, Limit driving time behind wheel
5, Enforce road rules
6, Improve road safety signs
7, Do it now and save thousands of lives

The saftey issues are a moot point in Thailand. For those of us who were schooled to be aware, don't assume anything and always be ready, these stories point out how lax the road criteria is in Thailand. The laws are there, the sensibility is not. That bus(as reported minimally) was in the wrong lane going downhill at 3:45am. The only words are that the police were questioning. Sad for the fatalities but if you do not at least buckle the belt, then you are at a risk. If the belt is
disabled or there is resistance to making it available, get the bus number. Take another one, it won't put you at risk.

I couldn't agree more with Dis 2.

I never sleep on a bus without the seatbelt. Such a simple and easy safety feature that can prevent death.

I once travelled on VIP bus and the seatbelt was tied under the seat. When I tried to release it the bus conductor told me not to. Why can't I wear my seatbelt? it my safety.

This should be the same for vans. Must vans have seatbelts but they are always disabled. Even the taxes. Why not just keep them in, and let the passengers decide what is safe for them?

Seatbelts are compulsory on coaches in many countries. Here, if they are even fitted, they are usually disabled. Those lives may have been saved with use of seatbelts. To actually disable them is denying someone the opportunity to be safe.

It's at a intersection with two lights and a S curve. Those buses go too damn fast and can not make the curve. Buses should not be allowed in the right hand lane. They block traffic in back of them. Thailand need new laws dealing with these buses.
