Karen torture girl can only hope for partial cure

The scald wounds covering the body of the 12-year-old Karen girl who fell victim to slavery can be cured although she won't make a perfect recovery, a doctor at Ramathibodi Hospital says.

Arthi Krueawit, a senior surgeon at the hospital, conducted a medical checkup on the girl yesterday after she was freed from years of captivity.

    If we can believe anything the police say, why did they allow the couple to travel to Cambodia? Send cops to watch them in Cambodia vs collect bribe money? The dirty cops should see their own children in the eyes of the Karen girl. An international boycott of Thai products might be the only way to see this couple brought to justice.

    I fully understand the need to educate the public, police and politicians.

    But that is not what this is about. This is police grandstanding at the expense of a victim. Did anyone obtain the girl's permission, or even ask her, if she wanted to be paraded naked in front of a whole bunch of cameras and video cameras, not to mention assorted hangers-on who had no right or reason to be present.

    If she consented, was it informed consent after sympathetic advice and time to reflect? For crying out loud guys, she is 12, & effectively without parental guardians. Think again.

    Can public education be served by this cheap display, or voyeurism?

    Whilst agreeing that the initial parading of the semi naked child before a room full of men distasteful, this photograph showing her with a hidden face and the doctor holding a towel up in front of her chest, really brought home how atrocious this crime. I believe if the scarring hadn't actually been shown, rather than simply read about, this poor child would certainly not be receiving the attention she currently is.

    As to bail. The police DO set bail, and pocket it.

    The poor girl. I just hope she makes a full recovery and doesn't have too many mental issues in the remainder of her life.
    If I knew where the two disgraceful people were who did this to her, I would tell the police immediately and I would give the girl the "bounty" money.

    Parading this child in front of journalists, is what has got her fast and free medical attention, Thai's need to be made ashamed of their fellows, or this child would have been send to a home far away, and when able shipped out of the country as an illegal. So BP don't stop bringing these poor people out into the light.

    I admit to being disgusted - so likely my words here will be a bit extreme - Thai culture seems to have loyalty first to money. Crimes are routinely excused for the right price - even in local villages, not just by corrupt police. Thai parents look the other way when their children send money home through the sex trade or drug trade - so long as they have money for drinking and gambling.In this case a small bribe to the police gets them bail in order to escape despite kidnapping, enslaving, and torturing a child. How often do we see money allow for everything in our adopted land. And Thai's can do anything to Karen - so sad

    Beside free medical service this Karen girl should be given a Thai citizenship as well, if she wish. And take away the citizenship of the two monsters.
