Scholars issue call for 'progressive learning'

Academics are calling on the government to promote progressive education to improve the standards of Thailand's universities.

Participants at a recent seminar on "progressive universities" at Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU) concurred that a progressive education system would be the most effective way to ensure that Thai students and the country would be able to compete on the global stage.

However, they said that progressive education had failed to make leeway here because universities have to abide by the government's educational policy and teaching directives.

Teachers, lecturers and professors are all aware of the need for progressive education but its too much of a chore to implement it. Universities simply cannot convert a rote taught kid into a critical thinker, it need to start at age 5, not age 18. By 18 it is simply too late. Teachers are aware of the needs but refuse to change their cushy number. The same way they know beating children is illegal but quite happily thrash kids daily. The ONLY answer to Thailands education woes is to get the dinosaurs out of the equation at the lower levels.

Progressive learning requires progressive-thinking educators and teachers that cannot be found readily.
