Suspected militants have launched a wave of long-awaited reprisal attacks for the failed raid on a marine base in Narathiwat province earlier this month, with near-simultaneous attacks recorded in six Pattani districts.

Twenty-nine spots were targeted in the attacks, which took place between 7.30pm and midnight Saturday.

The attacks included several bomb blasts and arson attacks.

Khun Bucktoui #17, the poor Arabs sprang because their food price jumped 30% to 40% overnight, as a result of the inflating US Dollar and increase in Asian buying power, especially, that of China in flour to make bread. The poor Arabs, who were already at the minimum margin of survival, had no choice but to revolt. However, for a major food producing country like Thailand, it is unlikely that Thais will see their food cost jump 30% or 40% overnight. Therefore, "Thai Spring" is extremely unlikely.

under control ? there are too many wannabe tv stars,, seem to be reading from the same made up script,but the reality has a habit of biting back,but then words and promises are too easily forgotten in the red propaganda circus

These attacks took place between 7.30pm and midnight on Saturday. I'm no expert, but wouldn't a nightime curfew, despite all its drawbacks, be a useful tool in countering this kind of insurgency against random soft civilian targets?

Trash can, tires, abandon house etc are not exactly major targets. These attacks in fact exposed the insurgents inability to take on more strategic targets. They tried but recent failure and large casualties attacking a military base where leaked intelligence from villagers revealed fading sympathy and support. The more there hit soft targets and casualties include Muslim, the more support they will lose. To say things are under control may be too premature but certainly the military is controlling the situation aided by move to ISA and the amnesty proposal.

The problem of revenge attacks is found every where in Thailand albeit not on this scale .Weak law enforcement has been the norm for so long that people now fear to report illegal activity because they know that their names could be leaked or if they are targeted by revenge attacks will probably be met by police shrugging their shoulders .If I had control of the police I would first fire most of them .

Did you miss In Muang district, a 3kg homemade bomb exploded near a branch of the Islamic Bank. At 8.30pm, a Dtac telecommunications tower in front of Ban Pare School in tambon Barahome was set alight, followed by a bomb blast in front of Had Thip Co in tambon Talubo about 9pm which injured seven defence volunteers. In Yaring district, a school building and an abandoned house were torched; a power transformer in front of Ban Takae School in tambon Takae was shot, causing a blackout. A fire truck belonging to Tanyong Lado tambon administration organisation (TAO) was also set on fire.
Nothing much happened.

Yes since Bin Laden was taken out it has been so quiet with no revenge attacks. Lesson learned is root out the leader and take him out. Use of drones is becoming more popular no as they are operated from computers in USA!

Will ARAB SPRING work in Thailand? It did work in Egypt, Libya and is till fighting hard in Syria. I believe long time ago once Indonesia and Malaysia used to be Buddhist countries, but why now these two countries are Muslim countries. I don't think these countries converted solely by peaceful fighting. Recently I saw a video that Malaysia government was destroying a Buddhist temple and big Buddha's statue. If the violent involvement of Malaysia government in deep south provinces didn't solved, I don't think any peaceful or violent way will work. Get to the root to kill invasive vine; Malaysia is the root of the problem.

Reply to D14: Examples of history where iron fist approaches have worked (mostly) positively: 1) WW2 victory over Japan and Germany 2) American civil war 3) Probably many more in Europe history
However, I'm not an advocate of such approaches. I believe those successes in the past have misled many in the world to think that they can do it again, as we/they are doing it now for the terrorist issue. Time and place are no longer the same. Today's terrorist really believe they are the good guys. They educate new generations to believe the same thing. Killing alone won't work. Talking alone won't either.
