Action needed to avoid sanctions, Cites boss says

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra pledged Sunday to end Thailand's trade in ivory following a global campaign calling for more protection for elephants.

Thailand would establish tighter controls to curb illegal flows of ivory and ensure the existing ivory supply is from domestic elephants before legislating for an outright end to the trade.

"The premier provided no timeframe for the change." That says it all.

Hillfarang - don't describe economic bubbles as being positive indicators. What has significantly increased as a result of her tenure is household debt.

You may note that your female examples are directly related to more powerful men which paved the way for their ascendancy. You also missed the point of Disc 4, he was referring to the lady in the caption.

    Disc7 Comment on Yingluck's performance?
OK... Southern insurgency - fail. Women's fund - fail. Tablet computers - fail. Rice policy - fail. Car tax rebate - fail. Cost of living - fail. Reconciliation - fail. Land reform - fail. Article 112 - fail

She's had a year and a half and achieved NOTHING! But you still grovel at her feet like she's the new messiah. SET and the baht is up? What exactly was her policy for achieving these? Oh... nothing.

I'm not some hick in the fields... I don't thank Yingluck for a sunny day. Show me a concrete, measurable achievement implemented by her.

Not mentioned here was the massive petition submitted by AVAZZ asking YS to stop all trading.

    I hope that she listens.

D@4 = "...certainly not a pretty face in sexy clothes with a sweet tongue.."

Your comment is sexist. Wecome to the 21st Century (Hillory Clinton, Prime Minister of Korea, Germany, etc.) Why not comment on YS's performance... actually Thailand is more peaceful now, higher SET & stronger baht that when Dem's were in charge...hmmm...

Until Thailand deals with its endemic corruption at all levels nothing will happen.

It has been almost a full day since Yingluck made the announcement. Is this crackdown over with yet? Time to move on. Next crackdown please.

"No one cares about elephants more than Thais," Ms Yingluck.

As with most things for most Thais, first and foremost elephants are a resource to be exploited.

Thailand needs a real hero. Not a cartoon character and certainly not a pretty face in sexy clothes with a sweet tongue.

If Yingluck claims that no one cares more about elephants than Thais then why is domestic ivory still for sale ?Why are they used to beg for money for tourists ? Why are they captured in the wild and tamed to be ridden by tourists ?

I gotta smile when I see Thailand being branded a 'hub' in this article.

Lots of talk, then will come a raid with an arrest or two, and then it will go away.
