BMCL to turn off escalators during off-peak periods

Descending escalators will be turned off at underground train stations during off-peak hours to cut back on electricity use, according to Ronnachit Yaemsa-ard, deputy governor of the Mass Rapid Authority of Thailand (MRTA), the subway train concession owner.

BMCL posted on its website inviting passengers to save energy by using stairs instead of escalators in "We all can do" campaign. Photo from www.bangkokmetro.co.th

He said the SET-listed operator, Bangkok Metro Plc (BMCL) planned to introduce the cost saving measure in response to the government's initiative on energy saving.

For many passengers (the old, infirmed or disabled) escalators are not a luxury but a neccessity. Agree with those who say that this is more about saving costs than environmental concerns.

The escalators were not designed for walking, otherwise the inclination would have been less steep. Elderly people with bad knees and without good balance will surely find themselves in a precarious situation climbing down the steep stairs.
But I agree that it should be turned off when there's no demand.

And again - for the millions and millions wasted on giving P1 students toy computers, they could be improving education so technical students can design and build more energy efficient means of moving people, instead of, you know, killing each other in daily gang violence.

This is not about saving energy, this is a good excuse for them to save money and then say they are doing their part for the country.

It is quite simple, really, just stop using MRT, even for a week. That will put pressure on them to take care of their customers.

I heartily concur with every comment on disabled access. I'd like to also suggest, turning off the air-con in the little boxes at every set of traffic lights in BKK. Might force the police out to do their jobs.

I seem to recall promises of handicapped access at all BTS stations when they were first being built.

I suggest instead they turn the TV off in all civil servant offices... this will save a lot more electricity!

I agree with Dis#1. The BTS has caught on to the idea of on/off escalators at some stations, so why hasn't the MRT? Interesting that they are feeling the pinch with rising costs though, isn't it, although the government will tell you the country is flourishing as never before. The MRT is obviously finding that the bottom line doesn't lie.
