The shooting deaths of two paramilitary rangers on Tuesday in Pattani's Mae Lan district were not related to insurgency in the South, Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command spokesman Col Pramote Prom-in said.
Col Pramote said the killing was committed by a fellow ranger, who he named as Sarawut Khamphan.
The incident took place at 4.30am on Tuesday. According to earlier reports, six rangers patrolling on three motorcycles were ambushed by militants near a circle on Pattani-Yala road at Lutong village in tambon Mae Lan of Mae Lan district. Two of them - Pvt 1st Class Ronnawit Singsai, 31, and ranger Kringsak Thupphutsa, 31 - were killed.
