Protest likely if ex-chief did go to Preah Vihear

PHNOM PENH - Thailand is likely to protest against a visit to the Preah Vihear temple by Unesco's former director-general Koichiro Matsuura, if reports of his visit to the temple last Tuesday are confirmed.

Pithaya Pookaman, vice minister to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and chief of the Thai delegates at the World Heritage Committee, said it was unacceptable for Mr Matsuura to visit the site for any reason.

Mr Matsuura has an active role with Unesco and should not visit the disputed site even on a personal trip, Mr Pithaya said. If and when the visit is confirmed, the government will send a protest letter to Unesco, he said.
