Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday expressed the fervent hope she will be the last casualty ever in Thailand’s long history of coups, in a comment to mark the 10th anniversary of the military's seizure of power from her brother Thaksin's government.
"Although many years have passed, this cycle is never ending in Thai society,” Ms Yingluck posted on Facebook on Monday, recalling the coup led by Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin that overthrew the Thaksin administration on Sept 19, 2006.
Ms Yingluck's own administration was subsequently ousted by the coup led by Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, who remains in power, on May 22, 2014.
She said each coup disgraced Thailand in eyes of the global community and led to a lack of economic growth, and poor trade and investment cooperation from other civilised countries.
Thais were also deprived of their rights and freedoms by each coup.
“I can only wish it will not happen again. And I hope I am the last person to have to bear the brunt of a coup," she said.
