Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his stunning victory in the United States presidential election.
The Republican Party also won control of the senate by 51 to 47, needing 51 for a majority, and also the House of Representatives by 234 to 178, needing 218 for a majority.
Gen Prayut said on Wednesday it was a democratic principle that the people's voice must be accepted.
"We have to adjust to change. Things keep changing. I have not been indifferent to change. Instead, I have been keeping abreast of it," Gen Prayut said.
"We have to adhere to a balanced foreign policy. We are in the middle. We have to think about what we can do for the best interests of our country. No matter who is the next US president, we will continue to cherish the US-Thai relationship of more than 180 years.
"We have to be prepared and adjust ourselves to change. We have to be on the offensive and apply a balanced foreign policy with every country in the world that is our trade or dialogue partner," Gen Prayut said.
Asked about the fluctuation in the stock market, Gen Prayut said this rested with both international and domestic situations.
Asked what he would do to improve investor confidence in the stock market, the prime minister said: "How can I build confidence in the stock market? What I have to do is to build confidence among the people in the nation."
