Just over one million people have so far answered Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s four questions about politics and the future of the country.

The Interior Ministry's Damrongtham Centre, which has offices in all provinces, on Wednesday reported that a total of 1,004,204 people had showed up at its 79 centres to submit their answers since June 12.

Khon Kaen had the highest number of people expressing their views, with 94,179 replies, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima (81,331) and Kalasin (68,569).

In the provinces, Samut Sakhon had the fewest respondents (408), followed by Phetchaburi (667) and Samut Songkhram (829).  At the centre's headquarters in Bangkok, 52 people shared their views.

Gen Prayut raised the four questions in his weekly address on May 26. Damrongtham centres began accepting replies on June 12.

The questions have been roundly criticised as an attempt to gather public support for the regime to stay on in power. The questions are:

1. Do you think the next election will bring a government with good governance?

2. What should be done if it fails to do so?

3. Elections are an important element of democracy. Is it right to [give importance to] elections alone without consideration for the country's future such as national strategy and reform?

4. Do you think political groups with inappropriate behaviour deserve a chance to run in elections? If they are [elected], who should solve the problem and how?
