Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said the regime may skip the primaries as it heads toward the general election expected in February.

When asked if the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) could issue a special Section 44 order to this effect, Gen Prawit said: "It is possible."

Critics say the primaries would occupy too much time and could prove costly to parties by leaving them rushing pell-mell to prepare for the next election.

Under the organic law on political parties that took effect on Oct 8, parties must organise primaries so members can choose their preferred candidates for both the constituency and party-list elections.

Gen Prawit said all parties that have registered with the Election Commission (EC) would be invited for talks later this month.

He said that even though there is no limit on how many party representatives can attend the talks, he expected several from each party would show up and that he is open to feedback.

No media will be invited to the talks. Live broadcasts or recordings by attendees will also be prohibited, he said.

He said the talks would likely be relatively brief.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Tuesday he had nothing to do with reports claiming that several former MPs from the Pheu Thai Party were being courted to join the Pracharath Party, seen as a potential vehicle to support Gen Prayut to return as premier after the poll.

"Everyone knows there's been a lot of political activity. Several parties have been set in motion. I'm not involved with any of them," he said.

Meanwhile, Gen Prayut is expected to address the issue of a bilateral Thailand-Britain free trade agreement as he leads a six-day European trade mission in talks scheduled to start Wednesday. His UK itinerary includes a meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May.
