There is now no reason for the election, tentatively scheduled for early 2019, to be postponed, Maj Gen Piyapong Klinpan, a spokesman for the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) said on Sunday.
Maj Gen Piyapong was responding to an announcement made by the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday that a royal decree on the election is expected to be issued on Jan 4, 2019 and the election is tentatively set to be held on Feb 24.
Since the EC has announced the election road map, all parties concerned are expected to start preparation while the NCPO will continue with its task of maintaining law and order so that the situation is favourable for the election.
He said the NCPO will continue to support and facilitate the current administration. Once the election has been held and an elected government in place, the NCPO will then hand over the country's administration to the new government, he added.
The NCPO has continued to monitor the country's security and political movements. So far there have been no factors which might force a change to the election road map.
"I would like to stress that we are monitoring the activities of all political parties and groups without discrimination," Maj Gen Piyapong said.
The NCPO spokesman said all political parties and groups are acting within the scope of the law, adding that if they do anything illegal, they will be treated according to the law.
"We can't say anything else but that the election will be held in early 2019 according to the road map. There is no reason to postpone it,'' he said.
