Yingluck discusses progress of EU deal

BERLIN, GERMANY : Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra met German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle yesterday on the second day of her official visit to Europe's largest economy.

They discussed a range of topics including a proposed Thailand-European Union free trade agreement (FTA).

Ms Yingluck mentioned her previous discussions with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in which both countries agreed to push for FTA negotiations.

The FTA would become a crucial mechanism to step up trade and investment between Thailand and the EU, Ms Yingluck said.

The PM and Mr Westerwelle also discussed Germany's dual education system, which Ms Yingluck said Thailand intends to learn from for the sake of the country's development.

Thai-German cooperation on agricultural product standards was another important topic Ms Yingluck discussed with Mr Westerwelle.

Germany has agreed to send experts to Thailand to conduct training aimed at improving the standards of products exported from Thailand to the EU and reducing the risk of them being rejected.

Mr Westerwelle also informed Ms Yingluck that the German minister of economics will visit Thailand in September to follow up on the framework of what has been agreed this week.
