Thaksin Shinawatra will visit the Myanmar border town of Tachilek opposite Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai on Tuesday, say his supporters.
The fugitive former prime minister may stay in the area for four or five days, said a source in the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).
Thaksin's itinerary will include a visit to the Tachilek Shwedagon Pagoda, which was built as a replica of the country's most famous shrine in Yangon.
The visit will come just days after Thaksin's sister, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, sought royal endorsement for a sweeping cabinet reshuffle that includes more Shinawatra family favourites.
Reports of Thaksin’s planned trip to the Thai-Myanmar border have begun to spread among UDD supporters in northern provinces, especially in Chiang Rai.
Some of Thaksin’s fans are preparing to travel to Tachilek and give him his favourite traditional northern foods, the source said.
A source in the Pheu Thai Party, who asked to remain anonymous, said the trip was intended to allow UDD members, Pheu Thai MPs and cabinet ministers to meet Thaksin and also attend a religious rite that will be performed for him.
