Police face pressure on media arrests

Media groups are demanding an investigation into the incident in which at least three media photographers were allegedly beaten by riot police during the Pitak Siam rally on Saturday.

The Thai Journalists Association (TJA) and the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association on Thursday submitted a letter to national police chief Adul Saengsingkaew demanding he order an investigation into the incident and disclose its findings. Members of the press must be included in an investigation committee, according to the letter.

Discussion 4 bob : Jumping to your conclusion that the three journalists were beaten and having their cameras damaged by security officers is a rash opinion. Please be reminded that the three reporters while working at the riot scene do not have priviliges above the law.

Interestingly, the police has not offered probable cause for the arrest of these people. According to the statements of the journalists, producing their press credentials did not seem to impress the guardians of law and order.

Apparently failing to wear the correct armband is, in itself, sufficient cause for getting beaten up, having one's equipment trashed and then being hauled off to another province under the current regime.

History repeating itself, indeed!

Why is compensation always at the root of any action? Does receiving compensation make the police actions ok? How about finding the perpetrators and firing them?

The three reporters worn yellow armbands instead of green ones that distinguished themselves fom the protestors. They failed to show their IDs when stopped by police. Security officers were instructed to arrest protestors who tried to break through the barricades. The repoerters were mixed among the protestors and so they were arrested. A no big deal misunderstanding during such a chaotic scenario.
