Boonsong facing rice scheme probe

The National Anti-Corruption Commission has decided to set up two subcommittees to investigate Commerce Minister Boonsong Teriyapirom for alleged irregularities in the government's rice-pledging scheme, NACC member Klanarong Chanthik said on Tuesday.

Mr Klanarong said the commission was responding to complaints filed with the NACC by Warong Dejkijwikrom, a Democrat Party MP for Phitsanulok, and other people.

The complaints and evidence attached to them carried enough weight for the NACC to set up two subcommittees to investigate Mr Boonsong.

Disc 8 - I think they should be transparent, but I'm not 100% convinced that the Government has worked out firm deals with all countries. If the Thai government releases the sell price of rice to say China their other deals that have not been completed may be jeopardized. I believe the Democrats are trying to make political hay rather than fight corruption and you do know that the NACC is also looking into the Dems rice scheme and have been for a while.

Disc 7. What negotiating ? Even the Chinese have said it is simply M o U's. They are not worth the paper they are written on. Surprised you do not think G to G deals should be transparent.

Disc 6 - You are negotiating the sale of some parts of your business. I ask you for the details and the documentation. Will you give it to me before the deals are set in stone. Not likely as it may jeopardize the deal themselves.

Seems he has a lot to hide; why else would he not reveal figures ? No doubt if it was a success Thaksin/PTP would let the world know.

Doubt if anything can be done about claiming MoU's as confirmed sales. Another white lie or another honest mistake ?

Alleged corruption in the rice pledging scheme does need to be investigated. Any possible confidence that the NACC might be a body capable of carrying out such an investigation in an impartial and objective way has been immediately undermined by its balatantly politically motivated decision to set up the second subcommittee referred to above. If it is to be effective in discharging its important role, the NACC will need to be much more mindful of the importance of not leaving itself wide open to accusations of political bias than it is as presently constituted.

It's like a children's playground out there. Songkran Grachangnetara's article in today's Bangkok Post says it all. If the politicians stopped the blame game and got on with improving the country instead of their own bank balances the country would progress - the alternative is regress.
