Pheu Thai set to kill charter rewrite bill

New proposal will have Democrat, court input

The ruling Pheu Thai Party plans to kill off its own charter amendment bill to head off a new round of political conflict and avoid risking dissolution, a party source said Friday.

The party's committee overseeing political strategy had agreed that the charter rewrite bill, currently pending parliament's third reading, should be voted down, the source said.

The bill seeks to amend Section 291 of the constitution to create a drafting assembly to rewrite the 2007 charter.

@renaissance. Of course Thaksin approves; he decided. His party do not make independent decisions. Let's what ace he has....or thinks he has.

'The party's committee overseeing political strategy had agreed that the charter rewrite bill... should be voted down'.

What committee ? They mean Thaksin has decided : 'Thaksin thinks;PTP acts'.

Oh. really, D3? And there was I thinking that PT’s final goal was to run the country in an effective and efficient manner for the greater good of the Thai people. How wrong was I?

    Dao (Dis 8)

When one of the basic functions of a MP in EVERY democratic country has become an offence, then you know that there is a serious problem with the Constitution.

The absolute beauty of the 1997 Constitution was the overall concept

Whilst the 2007 Constitution has improved several individual articles, it has been like a plastic surgeon concentrating on only one area without thought for the overall effect. The result is not beauty but disfigurement.

I like Discussion 6's comment! I can't believe that Thaksin approves of this. If he does, he must have a 5th ace hidden up his sleeve. He doesn't do things that don't benefit himself, and this sensible approach runs the risk of Thaksin eventually not being whitewashed as planned. Maybe the Pheu Thai politicians realize that Thaksin is like a concrete block tied to a chain, which is tied to the party, and that it is time to cut the chain; otherwise, they cannot achieve their goals. Personally, I feel that one day Pheu Thai and the UDD will dump Thaksin as he is just too divisive a figure, and they can earn lots of money without him anyway.

Stop trying to pardon Thaksins crimes and suddenly there is no need to play with the countries charter .

Lets just have a referendum to reinstate the 97 charter and be done with it.

Proposals for change are not the same as actual change, any group surely have the right to draft a proposed constitution, it is purely speculative. If I drafted a constitution with a clause allowing Farangs equal rights to Thais, that is my right, it doesn't mean anyone would pay attention to it.

Maybe the Big Boss is finally waking up to reality.
