DSI: No detention of Abhisit, Suthep

Investigators decided at a meeting today not to deny bail for former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his former deputy Suthep Thaugsuban after they report to the DSI on Thursday to acknoledge charges, Department of Special Investigation (DSI) chief Tarit Pengdit said on Tuesday.

The meeting was held after some relatives of those who died in the April-May 2010 violence submitted a letter to the DSI, demanding that Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep be put in jail.

The two men are to report to the DSI on Thursday, Dec 13, at 1pm to hear murder charges in connection with the death of taxi driver Phan Khamkong, who died during the red-shirt protests.  The Criminal Court ruled that he was shot dead by soldiers.

"...relatives of those who died in the April-May 2010 violence submitted a letter to the DSI, demanding that Mr Abhisit and Mr Suthep be put in jail." Relatives should understand that no government is going to set a precedent of jailing the PM and his deputy during a time of political upheaval. That would start a snowball rolling that might knock down their own house.

Thaksin was sentenced by the Supreme Court and several arrest warrants for cases have been issued. He violated the bail term while visiting Beijing in 2008. This happened 2 years after the coup and his own People Power Party and brother-in-law Wongsawat were in power. Abhisit is facing the absurd charges against him and will fight in court. He won't run away and will accept any verdict by Thai courts. See the difference ?

    D4/barmine:
I agree. The relentless onslaught of attacks and accusations on AV is one of the most massive cases of state sponsored character assassination I know of. It suggests that his opponents in the Pheu Thaksin regime must be scared stiff of him.

Thaksin must also be very envious of Abhisit for his ability to inspire so much fear, by merely trying to do his job. I think it's driving him bonkers!

You can tell how close Thaksin thinks he is to getting the charges against dropped by how much he is trying to turn up the heat on the opposition .The best thing about being in the right is having nothing to fear .

Of course there will be no detention, Abhissit and Suthep did what they had to do; call in the army when the police refused to do anything to stop the terror occupation of the capital by a bunch of red thug mercenaries...They were there illegally and against the constitution.....only a brain from the red villages refuses to see this universal logic...And....If Arisman is free on bail then ANYBODY should be....

Reconciliation may have a chance when all sides are willing to put all of the accused before the bar and when an independent judiciary adjudicates all cases purely based upon law, and not based on the possible political impacts of their decisions. Any form of "victor's justice", regardless by which side, will doom true reconciliation.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: no high officials or well connected persons in Thailand ever go to jail in Thailand, no matter the crimes.

Disc #1, I think you put your point over very well and it was very obviously understood. More over, you didn't have to google up words to compose it to pretend you were an intellect.

Mr A. is being attacked every way possible; draft dodging, murder indictment,
    overdue library book.
He is the biggest obstacle for Thaskin.
But guess what Thaskin, many more oppose you.

Disc#. They are NOT felons because they have not been convicted. Neither are they 'on the run'. They are they on bail, which they have not breached. This kind of hyperbolic distortion could be seen as extremely mischievous, but then it's more likely to reflect extreme ignorance - and not atypical of many who post comments on this site.
