Mae Sot in line for economic zone

TAK: The Interior Ministry is set to propose a new regulation to develop Mae Sot district into a special economic zone at the cabinet meeting in Uttaradit province on Monday.

Deputy Interior Minister Chatt Kuldiloke revealed the plan before attending a meeting on Sunday evening. He was speaking while visiting the districts of Mae Sot, Mae Ramat and Phop Phra in Tak this morning.

Pol Lt Gen Chatt said he had been assigned by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra to inspect areas to be used as construction sites for future development projects as the government wanted to turn the districts into a special economic and administrative zone to support border trade with Myanmar and respond to the formation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

This is another one of the obvious Thai scams and noone looks through. The main reason why they still block casinos in Thailand is because some politicians invested in the offshore casino business and they would loose a lot of money if this is legalized. Thats the reason why they block it, also all the undergound casinos where also plenty of politicians and uniformed people have interest in would be out of business etc. I dont understand why Thai people dont understand that they are just victims of corrupt others. By the way nobody would be forced into legal casinos, if you like > go, if you dont like > dont go. No need to pass your money to

I think it is a good idea, as Mae Sot has a lot of refugees, and at some point they have to make a living. Hopefully these ideas will not end up in having factories based on pure exploitation. I also hope that it will ease the life of the folks living in Mae Sot or its surroundings.

"special economic zone" means ... 'new water supply system', 'expansion of highway' and 'improvement of an international stadium' ... all great, but how does 'economic zone' fit in? Basic infrastructure is just the very beginning, what else, more relevant, is planned?
