EC wants election delayed 6 months

The Election Commission will propose that the Feb 2 election be delayed for six months at talks with caretaker Prime Minister Shinawatra tomorrow, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn, commissioner in charge of election management, said on Monday.

The meeting between the EC and the prime minister to discuss the EC's election postponement proposal has been scheduled for Jan 28 at 2pm at a venue yet to be fixed.

Mr Somchai said the member of the Election Commission will today hold a meeting to prepare topics to be raised for discussion with Ms Yingluck.

Initially, the EC would propose that the election be held in six months.

"The postponement should not be longer than six months from Feb 2.   We think it is a right timeframe.  We don't want a long interval because that would allow the government to stay too long in the caretaking position, which would cause damage to the country because a caretaker government cannot do anything much.

"At the same time, we need some time to resolve conflicts in society," Mr Somchai said.
