Clash of rival protesters averted

A clash between red shirts and anti-government protesters in Sakon Nakhon province was narrowly averted after the two sides attempted to rally at a spot both thought was the best location for their political activities.

Members of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) converged outside Muang Sakon Nakhon Municipality in the afternoon to launch an anti-government campaign in support of their comrades in Bangkok. The group was led by Somnuak Sangchan, the PDRC leader in Sakon Nakhon.

The peaceful rally turned tense when supporters of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) turned up at the same place. The group led by Sayan Thanakietpaisarn claimed they had planned to gather there.

Reports said the leaders and demonstrators from the two groups exchanged heated words.

Police stepped into the argument and held talks with Mr Somnuak and Mr Sayan. Soon after, the PDRC provincial leader agreed to leave the protest venue and demonstrate near an OTOP centre in Chareon Muang.
