A majority of people fear a new election could again be another waste of money, according to the result of a Suan Dusit Poll survey published on Sunday.
The poll was carried out between April 30-May 2 on 1,447 people throughout the country to gauge their opinions on Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva's visits to individuals and political parties to propose a solution to break the political impasse, and the agreement between Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the Election Commission to hold a new election on July 20.
On Mr Abhisit's proposal, most respondents, 42.98%, said they want Mr Abhisit to act out of sincerity, honesty and true intentions without any hidden interests; 32.77% said the Democrat leader should be given a chance to try; 10.64% viewed Mr Abhisit's move as a political game to gauge public opinions; 8.94% believed the move could lead to a solution if all concerned joined hands to voice their opinions and suggestions; and 4.67% viewed Mr Abhisit's attempt as an interesting political move.
On the agreement between Ms Yingluck and the EC to hold a new election on July 20, the majority or 52.29% thought the election could again face a lot or problems and turn out to be a waste of funds; 15.60% hoped the election would be transparent, clean and fair; 14.68% expressed concern that some political parties might boycott the poll; 11.01% wanted all sides to join hands to push the country forward; and 6.42% said it was an important matter which should be closely monitored.
In another opinion survey conducted by Suan Dusit Poll to gauge the people's opinion on political news, the majority of respondents, or 74.69%, believed the situation would be plagued with more conflict: 21.60% thought it would be the same as before; and 3.71% believed there would be less conflict.
The poll was carried out between April 30-May 3 on 1,312 people throughout the country.
