A group calling itself Rattha Bukkhon, or State Citizens, yesterday handed letters to the commanders of the armed forces seeking support for their move to request the King’s intervention in solving the political crisis.
The group’s coordinator Kriangsak Lekkla on Monday visited the Royal Thai Armed Forces Command, the army, the navy and air force headquarters to deliver the letters, which were received by representatives of the military top brass.
The Rattha Bukkhon group comprises retired senior military personnel led by former supreme commander Gen Saiyud Kerdpol.
Mr Kriangsak refused to reveal the details of the letters, only saying that they asked the armed forces commanders to support the group's attempts to seek His Majesty’s intervention in bringing an end to the political conflict.
He insisted the letters do not mention staging a coup or invoking Section 7 of the constitution to install an interim non-partisan prime minister.
“The group believes the way to end the political conflict and return the country to normalcy is to seek His Majesty the King’s intervention as in the past,'' he said.
"The military does not need to take sides, but is duty-bound to comply with the law and constitution and to protect the nation, the people and His Majesty,” a statement from the group said.
Meanwhile, the Chiang Mai-based Public Health Friends for Democracy alliance of doctors, nurses and public health professionals yesterday said it opposed any move to install a premier who is not chosen through an election.
