The heads of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) on Sunday said they are confident most employees will not join a work stoppage campaign announced by the State Enterprises Workers' Relations Confederation (SERC).
The confederation has called on state enterprise workers to stop work from Thursday, May 22 and join the People’s Democratic Reform Committee’s latest and “final round of protests” to oust the caretaker government and install a neutral interim prime minister and government.
SRT governor Prapat Chongsanguan said records showed most SRT employees had never joined the SERC’s previous strike campaigns which urged staff not to show up for work and participate in the PDRC street protests.
He said the months-long anti-government protests had affected the country and believed SRT staff would not join the May 22 strike to worsen the situation.
BMTA acting director Nares Boonpiam had a similar reaction to the planned strike. He said he had talked to BMTA union leaders and was told that they did not agree with the SERC’s move.
“BMTA workers will not stop work so as not to cause inconvenience to the public and commuters,” Mr Nares said.
