School tablet cash ‘running out'

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) is to consult Education Ministry officials about future funding for the second phase of the “one tablet per child” programme.

Obec secretary-general Apichart Jeerawuth yesterday said cash to continue Pheu Thai’s tablet scheme would be discussed during a meeting with ministry executives today.

He said the delivery of tablet computers to Mathayom 1 (Grade 7) students, particularly those in “Zone 4” north and northeastern provinces, had still not been completed.

The e-auction to supply tablets to Zone 4 is scheduled for mid-June, Mr Apichart said, adding that fresh funding would be needed to continue the scheme.

Meanwhile, permanent secretary for education Sutthasri Wongsamarn said all public and private schools across the country would resume classes today, after being ordered to close temporarily in the wake of Thursday’s coup.

Ms Sutthasri said she would today meet education executives to provide work guidelines and policies she had received after reporting to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

After staging the coup on Thursday afternoon, the NCPO called a meeting with government agencies to instruct them on policy matters.

Office of the Vocational Education Commission (Ovec) secretary-general Chaiyapruek Serirak said all Ovec colleges would also resume classes today.

He said Ovec was monitoring the political situation and individual colleges have the authority to suspend classes if the situation in their area poses a safety threat to students.
