Suthep freed, charged with rebellion

Suthep Thaugsuban and four of his senior core leaders of the defunct People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) were released from military detention Monday morning and was escorted to the Attorney General to be charged with insurrection.

Soldiers "accompanied" the five former anti-government protesters to the Office of the Attorney General to report and face insurrection charges at around 7.20am.

In addition to Mr Suthep, the PDRC group comprised the son of Mr Suthep's wife, Akanat Promphan, Sathit Wongnongtoey, Sombat Thamrongthanyawong and Somsak Kosaisuk.

All of them were detained by the military junta on Thursday afternoon immediately after junta chief Prayuth Chan-ocha seized power.

A fifth PDRC member, Thaworn Senneam, said Mr Suthep and his four aides would give their statements to the Attorney General, whose office then will gather evidence and decide whether to actually proceed on the rebellion charges.
