All agencies told to study draft charter

All government agencies have been told to study the draft constitution to see if there are any provisions that may be problematic or obstruct their work, deputy government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said on Tuesday.

Maj Gen Sansern said they are required to examine the draft charter and identify any sections that could cause problems.

They should also suggest any additions they think should be added to improve their agency's efficiency and effectiveness.

They are required to forward their opinions and suggestions to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam by May 19, so they could be considered at a joint meeting of the cabinet and the National Council for Peace and Order.

Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, deputy defence minister and army commander-in-chief, said the army had closely followed the debate on the draft charter in the National Reform Council.

He said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had ordered all deputy prime ministers and agencies to provide their opinions on the new charter.

Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, deputy prime minister and defence minister, had subsequently instructed all three armed forces to do likewise, he added.

Gen Udomdej also said the Reconciliation Centre for Reform would be told to invite academics, politicians of various political parties and representatives of various groups for another round of talks on reconciliation.

The previous round of talks at the army club on Vibhavadi Rangsit road had been very useful and those who attended had given constructive advice and suggestions.

"It is good to open a forum for all to express their opinions in a constructive manner instead of doing so through other channels.

"Those who receive an invitation to attend another round of discussions should not be surprised or scared off," he said.

Asked about a report that a new constitution drafting committee would be set up if the current draft failed to get approval, Gen Udomdej said he had not heard about it.
