Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday called on current leader Prayut Chan-o-cha to be open to different opinions in the lead up to the charter referendum.
On Ms Yingluck's Facebook page, she wrote that although she and Gen Prayut are in different positions today, they used to work together.
"I was once in your position. Although our paths to this position were different, I understand how you feel when you are criticised. But, as a public figure, we have to open up our minds to take criticism, be it good or bad, either toward ourselves or the government.
"Since I used to be in the same situation as you are now and I had to keep my patience, I understand your feelings well. But at the time I was not able to issue a law or an order the same way you are doing," she said.
"Before, you said to me that while the country is divided, if we think only about using the law to remove this and that person because he or she does not respond to our policy, the situation will deteriorate.
"I have always said that people might think differently but this does not mean it will break the country apart. Instead, it is good for all to voice their opinions about the development of the country.
"Today, I would like to remind you of what you said to me. I hope you will not forget it and do as you told me two years ago," Ms Yingluck said.
