YALA -- An assistant village chief tasked with "peace-making" was slain by motorcycle gunmen as he returned to his home in Yaha district on Sunday night, police said.

Pol Capt Montree Wichitwechakarn, deputy chief investigator of Yaha police, said the man was attacked about 10.45pm at Kuwing village in tambon Baro.

Usman Tosamae, an assistant village chief for peace-keeping, arrived back home on a motocycle after completing night duty.  Four armed men on two motorcycles arrived behind him and unleashed a barrage of shots at him.  Usman fell dead on the spot.

The assailants fled into the night after the attack. About 50 spent bullet cartridges were found at the scene.

The bullets also hit two parked pickup trucks and a nearby house, making holes in them.

Police blamed insurgents.
