YALA - A police officer was killed in an ambush while returning home in Muang district on Tuesday night, police said.

Pol Capt Siripop Janya, a duty officer of tambon Lammai police station, said that while Pol Lt Malaseng Sebing, 56, a deputy suppression chief of Lammai police station, was returning home on a motorcycle from a prayer at a village mosque along Lammai-Tonyi road in tambon Lammai, a group of men hiding on one side of the road opened fire at him with M16 rifles.

The officer, who was hit many times in his body, was killed instantly.  The incident occurred at about 8.45pm.

Police suspected the ambush was the work of an RKK insurgent group operating in the area.
