Third of women groped on buses

One-third of women who travel in public buses experience sexual harassment, according to the latest Super Poll.

The survey on two issues -- services offered by public buses and state-run hospitals -- was conducted among 1,417 men and women respondents from all walks of life during Feb 20 to 25.

The poll on public buses based on the experience of respondents over the past 30 days showed one-third of female respondents had been sexually harassed on public buses.

Also, 84% said bus drivers drove at high speeds; 78% said vehicles' windows, doors, handles and seats were in poor condition; 76% said drivers applied the brakes suddenly; 71% said the buses refused to stop at bus stops; and 70% said bus drivers tailgated cars in front of them.

Also, 66% said there was a musty smell on buses; 62% said there were too few buses on some routes; 60% said buses raced and competed for passengers; 60% said buses pulled over outside bus stops; and 60% got moody bus drivers.

Poll respondents were also asked about other issues including rude conductors, messy handwriting on the bus interior and pickpockets.

The average overall satisfaction of respondents was 5.75 out of 10 in case of the public bus service.

As for the survey on respondents' satisfaction with state hospital services over the past 12 months, 51% said they had to wait too long to receive medical services; 34% had encountered impolite staff; 29% said hospital toilets were dirty; and 28% felt doctors did not pay much attention to patients.

Respondents rated overall satisfaction with state hospital services an average of 6.38 out of 10.
