PATTANI: A police officer from Sai Buri police station and his wife were wounded by gunshots in an ambush in Sai Buri district late on Saturday night.

Pol Capt Sitthichai Poonsawat, the duty officer, said the incident occurred while Pol Capt Boonyan Sanbako, deputy investigation chief of Sai Buri police station, was returning home in Sai Buri town in a Mitsubishi Pajero SUV with his wife and their two-month-old daughter on board.

While nearing Ban Balo in tambon Pase Yawo, about 2 kilometres from their home, the vehicle was fired at by a number of armed men hiding on both sides of the road.

Pol Capt Boonyan was hit in the right leg. His wife, Iffah Yuso, 29, was also hit and slightly injured in the right leg, but their daughter was not hurt.

The injured Pol Capt Boonyan sped away from the spot to a secured area, from where they were taken to Sai Buri Hospital by local residents.

Police were investigating the incident. It was initially believed the ambush was the work of militants.
