Pattani schools reopen tomorrow

All 332 schools in Pattani will reopen Monday after teachers were convinced by Education Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana that their demands would be met as soon as possible, Boonsom Srithongprai, chairman of the Confederation of Teachers of Southern Border Provinces said on Sunday.

The confederation passed a resolution to close 332 schools in Pattani indefinitely to demand a review of security measures for teachers after the director of Tha Kam Sam School was shot dead by militants on Nov 22.

As a result, teachers went on strike and the schools were closed last week, starting Nov 26.

Mr Boonsom said Mr Pongthep convinced representatives of teachers from Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces who met with him in Bangkok on Nov 30 that their demands would be met as soon as possible, especially about welfare benefits including increased hazard pay and compensation for families of teachers affected by violent incidents involving southern militants.
