Narathiwat to close hundreds of schools

Almost 380 schools in Narathiwat will close for two days, starting Thursday, following the shooting of two teachers in the southern border provinces this week.

Sanguan Intarak, chairman of the Confederation of Teachers in Narathiwat, Wednesday called a confederation committee meeting to discuss security for teachers in the deep South.

Mr Sanguan said the committee had agreed to suspend classes at 378 schools under the Narathiwat Primary Educational Service Area Office 1-3.

"Mr Chinnapat, however, acknowledged that a shortage of teaching staff has prevented the government from offering Islamic studies in more schools."

Who could blame any teacher for choosing not to teach there?

Terrorists are their own worst enemies.

the df minister and his 1600 generals, you would have thought they could come up with a plan of action, what exactly are they doing to make thailand safe, yet the pm instruct 17000 police to quash a recent rally, attended by middle aged tax payers,my sympathy goes out to deep south citizens

To hold children as hostages in a religious war is simply a 1000 year step back from democracy for which the very same criminals are screaming and yelling.
These shameless terrorists, no matter what religion they fight for, set back the development of the south by decades and is damaging the country as a whole.
It is time to stop the sweet talk and instead take full action and punish every single individual committing these crimes and the punishment should be without any kind of mercy.
Follow rule and order or face the consequence.

This government closing the schools for a period of time was the most humane thing they have done yet for the safety of the teachers and children. As far as the children missing out on an education, well that's a whole different topic and by no means limited to the south of Thailand alone.

Not a good idea for the children and their studies but, honestly with the government more intent on changing the laws to whitewash the evils of a criminal and bring him back a here - it is the best the local people in the south can do. Our sympathies and condolences, we really cannot offer more as any demonstration to show support for anything that the government does not care about will only bring - violent police supression and tear gas handling.

Talk is cheap, but action is precious, OK? It's a big gap between what the Govt said and what is actually unfolding there.
