40 armed men steal rifles in outpost raid

About 40 armed men in military-style uniforms yesterday raided a village defence volunteers' outpost in Pattani's Kapho district and stole five assault rifles.

The outpost, in front of Ban Bango school in tambon Karubi, was surrounded by the men about 5.30am.

The group tied the volunteers' hands and legs before making off with four AK-47s and one M16 along with five bullet-proof vests, a communication radio and a number of mobile phones belonging to the volunteers.

There is a poster in my local Tops grocery asking people to donate money to help buy body armour for soldiers serving in the far south. It is a nice gesture, but why isn't the Army providing it for them? It would be far more useful than the lead balloon the Army spent millions on.

Khun BKPoster #7, but whom do they report and be accountable to for those missing AK-47s and a M-16, which will most likely be used against the poor teachers over there? That's why I prefer a combination of drones and special ops over those useless "defense volunteers."

Re: D2....well she has done exactly the same thing that your hero Abhisit did and the same as the Army general that served as PM before him did and the same thing that every PM has done for 20 years has done to fight off an Islamic bid to take over the South. Not Much.
RE: D1... I think it was not the military, but it was a band of volunteer security guards. But I may be wrong.

Since its been determined there's no terrorists in Southern Thailand, they'll most-likely clean the rifles/weapons and return them to the outpost.

"Funds raised from postcard sales will sponsor medical supplies and support the wellbeing of the soldiers"

and exactly what does "support the wellbeing of soldiers" mean?

Maybe they are trying to send a message - don't fight and we won't harm you. At any rate it looks like Muslim versus Muslim these days.

No doubt the motive for the postcards is sincere but leadership would be a better New Years gift to the poor souls forced to live under the Defense Minister and Army Chiefs indifference.

Postcard are at least a tiny improvement on the paper birds for peace plan

If something like this was to happen at a US Military outpost in Afghanistan (for a second time), an investigation would be launched immediately, to find out what went wrong, and who was responsible for it, up the chain-of-command, with corresponding punishment rendered. It is always stemmed from poor leadership and little or no accountability. Instead of raiding on terrorists' hideouts, the terrorists ended up raiding the military outpost for guns and ammo. This can't be real! The teachers have good reason not wanting to teach and be shot dead there.
