Toddler, two teachers among six killed in brazen shootings

Six people have been killed, including a toddler and two teachers, and five others seriously wounded in two brazen shooting attacks in the deep South.

The first incident took place in Narathiwat's Rangae district Tuesday morning when gunmen on a pickup truck fired AK-47 and M16 assault rifles into a tea shop, killing three people instantly including a toddler, and wounding six others at the scene.

One of the wounded died later in hospital bringing the number of dead to four.

Do you have a reference for that anywhere on the net. I don't remember reading it anywhere but I could easily have missed it. Thank you.

In the case of Kru Se Gen.Panlop has admitted (boasted) that he disobeyed government orders which were to settle the siege without violence. In the case of Tak Bai there has never been any evidence to show that TS had any prior knowledge of the "transport arrangements", much less ordered them.
The primary responsibility in both cases lies with the army and under Emergency Rule the army has immunity from prosecution, that is why in this week's report the International Crisis Group (ICG) called for its repeal.

Is the DSI playing double standards ?
When will the DSI start investigating the atrocities (Kruse,Takbai) that happened in 2004.
It is high time that the PM who was in charge in 2004 be held responible.

I can not even begin to imagine what losing an 11 month old child must be like, especially losing one like this. My heart goes out to them.

These lslamic terrorists attack schools and teacher because they don't want people to be educated. They want to take them back to the dark ages with Sharia law and woman enslaved, shops closed on Fridays etc

Domdunnn dis #17, always good to have objective comment like yours. Certainly the devil in the details if self governing special rights are given to the South. Top of the list would religious, education, official language, budget expenditure, investment allocation and perhaps some form of sharia law. I guess enforcement and military aspects would unlikely to be relinquished which will appease the uniforms. Just my 2 cents worth.

It's high time the people of Thailand demanded more decisive action from this pathetically weak government and the media should be piling pressure on the government also that enough is enough and time for action. What are the army and police doing there in the south? Nothing it seems yet 66m has been given for more armoured vehicles. Why do they not do as we all saw before in Bangkok, and send in an army of men in black to destroy the terrorist leaders plans by arresting them all. This government says they know who the leaders of this violent campaign in the south are. So if this is true go and arrest them.

What evidence is there that every one of these senseless killings is the work of "insurgents"? Might it not be possible that some could be put down as tit-for-tat retaliations? I would have thought that the insurgents would need all the support they could get from Southern muslims, so why would they want to kill innocent women and children? Or maybe I'm just being naive.

I think how a vote would go would depend on the details of self government on offer, real self government would probably get a 'yes' but what Bangkok are likely to offer wouldn't be worth the fight.

The ICG comment about "political in-fighting and bureaucratic inertia" highlights the problem, the government/military/bureaucracy can't agree on a strategy and the government isn't powerful enough to make them.

For too many southerners the security forces and the 'men of violence' are one and the same.

What do you think of the Int Crisis Group idea that the government should cancel the emergency decree that gives the army immunity from the law and pull the army out of the south?
