Prayuth backs armoured escorts

Teachers in the deep South should go to work in armoured vehicles in high-risk areas, army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said.

A security plan for teachers in the strife-torn region has been reviewed several times as authorities work to prevent attacks by insurgents, Gen Prayuth said.

He had recently proposed to the government's committee for strategic development of the southernmost provinces that state agencies meet to find ways to ensure teachers' safety.

Well, the South of Thailand has always been a Malay independent Sultanate until the Siamese annexed it and thanks to the help of the British. About 200 years of Siamese invasion, during which they have always wanted to convert the Muslim to Buddhism and Bangkok to establish an administration under the rule of Bangkok. So, well, maybe time for Bangkok to listen to their original rights?

How many new driving licences were issued in the same period? And has anyone clue of the average time taken to teach each new driver the skills need to drive on congested roads. Written tests become meaningless unless pupils have been taught basic road craft on real roads and not in an empty parking lot.

In my opinion, these aren't good ideas because they do nothing to stop, or eleminate the insurgency. Placing soldiers in classrooms could make them sititng-ducks for an attack. The right thing to do is to call in Auzzie Special Forces and British soldiers, to provide training required to put down the insurgency.

Disc 6, dao. How correct you are about finding who the insurgents are as it has never even been fully realized why the insurgency is even taking place. But of course it is all about Pattani, politically and religiously. I would bet that if there were serious talks with the PULO that something positive would emerge. Even if it was a 50 - 50 agreement, the needless killings would subside.

Statements such as this from the Thai army command clearly show that the Southern terrorists are winning the struggle.

Instead of going after the symptoms try going after the source of the problem .The people doing the killing .Find out who they are .

Thats no solution to the problem, if the government can focus on the south more than their silly charter change maybe it will do more good for the country.

Nice, lets say the teachers are 100% secure. How about the rubber workers, shop owners, street vendors, train personnel, police personnel, house wife's, laborers.

I think even in the mind from this "high" rank officer must be some question marks.

All those visits to the troubled south have no value. On the day a "high" rank officer fly in the area the personnel from other areas get diverted to the landing place. Witch mean high security for the "high" rank officer and less protection for the abandoned area's

It would be a step in the good direction to ask countries with similar problems how they react and learn from their mistakes.

I have been here a long time and am quite cynical, but this takes the biscuit. If this is the army chief God Help Thailand. No wonder Chalerm is keeping well out of it
