Chalerm visiting Malaysia

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung will discuss security issues during his three-day visit to Malaysia beginning today, National Security Council (NSC) chief Paradorn Pattanathabutr said on Tuesday.

Mr Chalerm will be accompanied by Lt-Gen Paradorn, and Pol Col Tawee Sodsong, director of the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC).

Lt-Gen Paradorn said Mr Chalerm, in his capacity as director of the government-appointed committee for implementation of policies and strategies to solve problems in southern border provinces, would seek an exchange of information with Malaysia on security issues, including the sources of finance for insurgents operating in South Thailand.

Problems of Thai business operators and workers in Malaysia would also be discussed, he said.

Lt-Gen Paradorn said the main objective of the visit was to boost cooperation between the two countries, not seeking to meet with core members of the insurgency movement.

It was believed that with cooperation from Malaysia, Thailand would be able to effectively cope with the insurgency in the South in the same way Malaysia succeeded in its suppression of the Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) in the past with cooperation from Thailand, said the NSC chief.
