Teachers make vow to stand by students

More than 700 teachers in the far South took an oath not to abandon their students in the region in an activity to mark Teacher's Day in Narathiwat Wednesday.

More than 700 teachers packed Narasikkhalai School’s conference room in Narathiwat’s Muang district to celebrate Teacher’s Day yesterday. WAEDAO HARAI

The event was held at Narasikkhalai School in Muang district, where Narathiwat deputy governor Sittichai Sakda presided over the ceremony and presented awards to teachers with excellent performances last year.

Finishing eight years of teaching in Peru (I have several doctorates including in English, Education, etc.) I know most teachers are poorly prepared. Peru classroom teachers have no subject-matter knowledge. Most universities are for profit or religious indoctrination, not for education--as exists in in the USA (google: 7000 students drop out of school every day). Excessive emphasis is on methodology and pedagogy, next to zero on subject-matter (I failed a graduating class in teaching of English as none knew why an adjective usually comes before a noun; phonics ignored; writing abysmal) but all get teaching jobs and Peru education suffers.

Education is a sub-standard in Thailand and even self congratulating articles like this one won't change this sad fact.

I agree. I received a Royal decoration for service to education, more than anything else, because I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
These teachers deserve not just a special award, but also hazard pay for being in a hardship posting and extra benefits for their families, if something happens.

Yesterday i was mocking around as a result of another free day-off for the kids to be @home.
Today i apologize in public through this comment after reading and realizing that the real teachers are hero's.

this morning everybody around me went of for work, so did the "south" and look what the header is at this moment in BP?

deep respect for the teaching staff in the south!!!!

The problem is that teachers in Thailand suffer from poor training in education programs across the spectrum; from the best to the worst universities. However, the majority can't be faulted for their dedication to their students, especially these brave people in the south.
While much critism is levelled at Thai students and their poor perfomance, the blame really lies with dedicated teachers, who themselves are so poorly served and short-changed by the system and the government.

Teachers at government schools are civil servants. They receive various awards for service and wear the ribbons on their uniform. The government should create a special ribbon to show service in the 3 southernmost provinces. Politicians receive the highest royal honours and wear them, deserved or not. These teachers have earned special recognition.

Born in the USA and having taught Micronesians in Hawaii, and having completed eight years teaching in the poorest province in Peru, I applaud the Thai teachers for their courage and dedication. Education is essential for any nation to become, stay, and continue to be better, regardless of cost of time or even life. Having been attacked in some of the poorest areas, I did not hesitate to return, as people truly want to learn and teacher are their guide to knowledge and the example of tenacity that they need. Life without purpose is no value, but life helping others to be contributing members of an evolving society is the best reward.

these teachers are role models..they do their job in the face of violence and death to teach our kids.

If anyone should be compensated, it should be these teachers.

"Meanwhile, Ms Yingluck yesterday promised to support teachers with improved benefits and welfare so they could live more comfortably" - more beneficial if she gets that deputy of hers to get his finger out and protect them instead of getting steamed with old friends while on trips funded by the taxpayer. What happened to that Bangkok based war room that there was so much hullabaloo about before ?

Most of the teachers in the South are also unarmed whereas the "brave" policemen who refused are usually well armed. If Thailand is lucky these teachers may be teaching future politicians of Thailand and showing them honesty and integrity and a way to lead Thailand from the mess it is in right now.
